Latin Grammy Nominees for Album Of The Year

Nominados al Latin Grammy por Álbum del Año

Yes, I'm going to start this article with the statement that this list is missing an album, Chayanne's 2010 release "No Hay Imposibles" should be among this list of nominees. It baffles my mind once again as to how the best album release of the entire qualifying year failed to make the cut. Bariloche wrote an incredibly tactful article addressing this unwelcome phenomena. So I won't go over the territory again. With that said we wish all of the nominees well.

The list of Latin Grammy Nominees for Album of the year are/La lista de nominados al Latin Grammy para el álbum del año son:

Alex, Jorge y Lena by Alex, Jorge y Lena
Entren Los Que Quieran,  Calle 13

En Primera Fila, Franco De Vita
Euphoria, Enrique Iglesias
Sale El Sol, Shakira

So who do I think the front runners are going to be? Calle 13, Enrique Iglesis, and Shakira. To Start, Calle 13 garnered a record 10 Latin Grammy nominations in all of the major categories. Enrique has been dominating the charts since the July 2010 release of "Euphoria" . Out of 10 songs, The chart topping "Euphoria" contained six duets with artists that were all from various genres (Latin, Pop, Hip Hop, and R&B) does the formula sound familiar? Shakira's "Sale El Sol" has record sales that speak for themselves.

My pick for the Latin Grammy Album of the year is going to go to Shakira. To top off Shakira's nominations, she will be receiving an incredible honor from the academy. Shakira will be receiving honors for her contribution to music and charity work.   In my opinion Shakira brings much more than her music, but we'll have to tune in to the Latin Grammy Ceremony to see if I'm right.

Shakira and Alejandro Sanz, Una Memoria Sensual

I've always known that the very name Shakira is synonymous for "Sexy". From the very moment she exploded onto the music scene she's been acknowledged for moves that would make a lesser woman cry for a chiropractor, rivaled only, in the opinion of some by Beyonce. Alejandro Sanz on the other hand I have only ever thought of as the romantic balladeer, who could woo you with his dark, smokey tenor voice....but the other day I saw an old video of a duet between Shakira and Alejandro Sanz that not only confirmed her sexy, but showed me a side of Alejandro that until then I didn't know existed.

The duet is a song titled, "La Tortura" (Torture) The lyrics are no different than many romantic duets...but the video on the other hand puts an entirely different spin on things. In my opinion Shakira is one of the few female artists out there that could coax Alejandro into giving us a glimpse of his, "hidden sensualidad". It indeed is a pleasant surprise. It made me wonder....as steamy as Shakira can be if there was one Latin male artist that could be a match for her and maybe even help her find new heights of "sexy".....there can be only one answer to that question...*WINK*.....anyway I digress.

I think it only apropos that since both Shakira has been nominated for a Premio Lo Nuestro Award and Alejandro Sanz has been nominated for both a Premio Lo Nuestro and a Grammy Award,  that we take a quick look back at this incredible duet.

"The music video for "La Tortura", directed by Michael Haussman, has a simple plot: from his new girlfriend's apartment, Sanz spies on Shakira as she is walking down the street holding a bag of onions on her way to her own apartment, which is on the other side of the street from Sanz' girlfriend's apartment. When Shakira enters her apartment, she changes clothes. From that moment on, Sanz remembers things the two had done in the past as a couple, while Shakira reveals her alter-ego dancing erotically on the building's roof, covered with black paint. The choreography of the music video was made by Jamie King and Shakira herself.
The music video is in itself somewhat notable, as it was the first time MTV showed a whole episode of their Making the Video series in another language (with English subtitles). It was also the second Spanish-language video ever to enter in Total Request Live's countdown, and peaked at number four on the countdown. It can also be noted that the video for "La Tortura" was one of the first in the Spanish-language to get heavy rotation on mainstream American and Canadian music channels such as MTV, VH1 and MuchMusic as in all almost over world Yahoo! sites. The remix version of the song, known as "La Tortura (Shaketon Remix)", has it own video (also directed by Haussman) featuring some previously unseen scenes. This video can be seen on Oral Fixation Volumes 1 & 2 Bonus DVD."

So with that...slide back to the year  2005 and experience a very enjoyable "La Tortura".....

Shakira - Latin America's Goddess

When this tiny, sympathetic, happy girl came into the music scene in the early 90s, it was evident she was destined for stardom.  Born in Barranquilla, Colombia on February 2nd 1977 (Happy Early Birthday!!!) as Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, she probably never imagined in her wildest dreams the impact she would have in music for years to come.

I remember like it was yesterday, my 13 year old self was walking around with my walkman singing Y Estoy Aqui” (It was with this song that Shakira became internationally known) and Antologia off her debut album Pies Descalzos.  By 15, I was signing “Ciega, Sordomuda” at the top of my lungs.  There were many other hits in this album Donde Estan Los Ladrones including Moscas en la Casa, Inevitable, and Ojos Asi.  Her sound was fresh, it was cool, it was exactly great for everyone of any age.

She became an international sensation with the release of her crossover album, Laundry Service.  What girl on this planet was not signing “Whenever, Wherever”?  How many did not sign up for belly dancing classes after seeing her video?  She brought back the sensual art of belly dancing into the new millennium and made it her own.  How many artists claim the same?

Let us not forget her most amazing collaborations throughout the years:  “La Tortura” with the amazing Spaniard Alejandro Sanz and “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean from the Black Eye Peas.

Her new album Sale El Sol debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200.  It is not Shakira’s forth top ten album and her third highest album debut following the debut of Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 which debuted at #4 and held the highest debut for a Latin Album in the year 2010.  The song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” [Waka Waka (Esto Es Africa)] became the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  It is this album that gained Shakira 3 nominations on the upcoming Premio Lo Nuestro Awards:

Premios Lo Nuestro 2011 Nominations
·        Artist of the Year
·        Best Female Artist
·        Pop Song of the Year – “Lo Hecho Esta Hecho”

Since the start of her career, Shakira has always been a philanthropist.  In 1995 she founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation in Colombia with special schools for poor children.  She has participated in many charitable performance concerts such as VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, Live 8 Benefit Concert in Paris and she is an active member of Fundacion ALAS (much like our beloved Chayanne).  She is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and in 2006 was honored at a United Nations Ceremony for her creation and work with Pies Descalzos Foundation.  In 2010, she was awarded a medal by the United Nations’ International Labor Organization, again for her work with children and young people in need.

Shakira to Launch Children’s Book

The Colombian singer has written a book that chronicles the adventures of "Dora the Explorer" to raise money for her foundation”Pies Descalzos” (Barefoot Foundation).

Shakira is not content with being one of the most famous Latin singers around the world; she now also wants to try her luck as a writer.  According to Notimex, the Colombian artist has written a children’s book that narrates the adventures of “Dora the Explorer”.

The singer is not only the writer of this story, but also has a starring role alongside Dora, which was turned into a cartoon. This book is entitled “Dora the Explorer School Day World Adventure”   and reportedly intended to make children around the world realize that with education they can embark on a fun adventure.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), chaired by the artist, which provides assistance to underprivileged children in her native Colombia.

Shakira is not the first famous artist to launch a children's book.  Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Gloria Estefan and Maria Celeste Arraras are some of the celebrities who have already tried their luck as writers of children's stories.
